Compsoc Open Source
What's this all about?
At the start of the academic year in 2009, we will be inviting Compsoc members to get involved in a new Open Source project, developed from scratch by students from Leeds University. We will be sending out emails at the start of term informing people of when the first meeting will be.
Why should you get involved?
Being involved in an open source project could be a huge asset when you look for jobs. Employers want to see that you are passionate about what you do; working on an open source project is a brilliant way to demonstrate that you are. Lots of jobs ask for previous experience and such a project is a good way to set you apart from the rest of the job market. Being involved in an open source pro ect not only allows an employer to see that you have worked on a proper project before, but allows them to see what you contributed.
It will also be helpful at job interviews; you will be able to talk about what problems you overcame, what it was like working in a team, etc. Also, if the project takes off and the employer has actually heard of it, being able to say that you were actively involved from the start will reflect well on you.
Not only will getting involved help you when you apply for jobs, but it is a great way to contribute back to the open source community that we all use so much from. Contributing to the project should also improve your coding skills. When it comes to programming, only so much can be taught in a lecture theatre; the only way to improve is to actually spend time programming.
If you’re not a programmer, don't worry, you can still get involved - we’ll need designers, web developers, people to write documentation, testers and people with fresh ideas.
OK, I'm interested! How can I find out more?
